英文摘要 | Background: To evaluate the usefulness and limitations of peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) in cancerous patients. Methods: We analyze the data of the first 31 patients who received PICC line placement in the Division of Hematology/Oncology, Tri-Service General Hospital from January 2000 to October 2000. Patients with successful insertion were divided into 2 groups, i.e. group A for nonhematological cancers and group B for hematological cancers. Data was analyzed for successful insertion rate, complication rate, successful completion rate and the applicability of PICC in patients with hematological and nonhematological cancers. Outcome data include numbers of line placed, reason for removal, and average catheter dwelling time. PICC was removed when there was complication, patient expired or chemotherapy was completed. Results: Of 32 PICC attempts, 26 (81.3%) were successful initially. The rate for completion of therapy was 41.2% in group A and 11.1% in group B. The most frequent reason for early termination was infection (60% in group A and 87.5% in group B). The average catheter dwelling time was 73.9 days in group A and 49 days in group B. The longest duration of using PICC was 171 days and the shortest 2 days. Conclusions: PICC carries a significantly higher complication rate of infection in immunocompromised patients. It is more suitable in patients with nonhematological malignancies than in patients with such hematological cancers as leukemias. |
