| 英文摘要 | Recently reports on the decline of reading activities in public libraries repeatedly appeared on various media. Since reading is a basic means to accumulate knowledge, it is vital to find whether the same decline has occurred on university campus. Based on the circulation statistics of 1998-2002 of the National Chung-hsing University Library, the author analyzes and studies changes and issues concerning reading activities during the five year span and has the following findings: 1.The 1999 Ji-ji earthquake has tremendous impact on users and their reading activities, evidenced by both the lowest gate counts and the lowest borrowed-book counts during 2000. 2.A decline in the gate counts but an increase in the borrowed-book counts was found, comparing the figures of 2002 to those of 1998. 3.The gate counts showed that about 65% visiting the library to borrow books. 4.Resurgence of reading activities was closely related to accessibility of library materials and services. 5.Chinese books borrowed ranged 88.58% in the total while 11.42% of book borrowed were written in the western language. 6.Electronic resources were heavily used and among the electronic resources e-journals had the most use counts. Based on these findings, the author concludes that the reading activities demonstrate a strong resurgence and even a growth after the earthquake and the real core users are probably hampered by the physical environment rather than really lessen. As teaching and research remain the main goals of universities, the reading activities with university libraries will continue and likely diversify in the media used. |
