英文摘要 | One recurring theme which runs throughout most of the texts written by women in the African diaspora is the mothers' strength and perseverance in protecting their daughters and sons against forces within societies which are usually gendered, sexualized, and racialized. In particular, the motherline or matrilineage in African American literature has been presented in the form of a massive and severe violation and disruption enacted forcefully by large-scale racist expropriation of black women's reproduction and the subsequent inhuman rupture of the bond between black mothers and their children especially under slavery. With an aim to terminate the infliction of slavery and racism on their children, some black mothers choose reluctantly to perform the destructive act of murdering their children. Drawing from Patricia Hill Collins's black feminist study of motherhood, the concept of othermothering will be utilized to highlight my argument in this study. In addition, Jessica Benjamin's intersubjective theory will also be mentioned as reinforcement to the subjects of mothering and mother-child relationships under discussion here. On the one hand, I will use Toni Morrison's two novels, Beloved and Sula, to demonstrate how the mother-child relationship and the black matrilineage are interrupted by the fatal destructions carried out by the mothers and the institution of racism and sexism respectively. On the other hand, I will illustrate how black motherliness are restored and maintained through other forms of maternity operated mostly in a female-affiliated network and connection. Finally, this study will conclude that the Afrocentric cultural practice of othermothering suggests the reinstatement of the maternal at the center. |
