英文摘要 | In contemporary Western consumerist society, how are a person's identity and subjectivity constructed, performed, and obscured through the act of consumption? What are the relationships among commodity, fashion, and the consumption of culture, and how do they convey the messages of need, desire, taste, and social status? These are the issues that have preoccupied the American artist Barbara Kruger in the 1980s and 1990s and engaged many scholars in the humanities and social sciences. Her famous photomontage, I Shop Therefore I Am, not only plays a significant role in her work, but the aphorism has now entered the advertisement rhetoric and everyday conversation. Using the dynamics between images and words and enacting agency and allegory in appropriation art, Kruger explores the psychological, philosophical, and social meanings of consumption, and particularly deals with abuse of the logic of consumption with humor and irony. This paper focuses on the theme of consumer culture in Kruger's visual and textual production with a consideration of her shifting and multiple positions in the art world and the commercial milieu. First, it discusses the ways she tackles the issues of subjectivity, self-construction, and commodity fetishism in the process of consumption. The second part of the paper pays heed to her astute insights into the commodification of art and the various functions of museums. Finally, it elucidates the politics of gaze and the reflection on media culture in her collaborative projects with fashion magazines. Considering the relevant theories of consumption and media and sociological studies, this paper explores the crisis and renewal of the self under the influence of consumer culture, and the alternation and overlapping of art's commodity status and criticality. |
