英文摘要 | We trapped and removed Red-bellied squirrels (Callosciurus erythraeus) for a continuous seven days at two Cryptomeria japonica plantations, one with severe squirrel damage and the other with light damage, to test if the different damage was associated with the squirrel density at Chitou in January and April 2000. We found no significant correlation between the damage level and squirrel density. More squirrels were trapped in April than in January in both plantations, indicating the fact supplement from neighboring population often a short period of squirrel removal. The results suggest the trapping or poisoning practices in a small scale have limiting efforts on lowering because of the high reproductive and dispersal ability of squirrels. From the tourist questionnaire survey we found that most of the tourists knew little about the wildlife at Chitou, and many of them did not know the connection between the squirrel and the red-headed Cryptomeria japonica. In terms of the squirrel removal practices, the number of pros and cons was similar, primarily depending on personal experience with nature and wildlife. Income, and understanding and recognition to nature were correlated with the amount of willing-to-pay to protect wildlife. Regarding the issue of squirrel removal. Chitou should base its decision making on an overall long-term management goal. Public education throught interpretation activity or exhibition board can aid to avoid public misunderstanding. |
