英文摘要 | 蛋塔dan-ta (custard) and 三明治san-imng-zhi(sandwich), two transliterated mandarin terms, are written as 撻(dan ta)and 三文治(san wen zhi) respectively in Hong Kong. The word “Sandwich”, when denoting a person’s name, has generally been rendered as 桑威奇(sang wei qi). The variations of transliteration seen in 塔/撻、三/桑、明/文/威、治/奇actually involve such phonological phenomena as entering-tone syllaboic ending, closural syllaoic ending, consonant differentiations between 微(wei)and 明(ming), 端 (duan)and 知(zhi), as well as palatalization of tongue-root sounds. This article attempts to analyze the phonological phenomena involved in the two examples, and further investigate what script spelling and pronunciation problems possibly occur in the act of transliteration. The purpose is to elucidate finally the intricacy of transaction between dialect pronunciation and translitation. |
