英文摘要 | Before the seventeenth century Taiwan was a paradise for deer. After the deer had been hunted and slaughtered by the Dutch, the Ping-Pu and the Han people, the land was cultivated for farming. Agriculture became important. In early Ching Dynasty water conservation systems were not sufficient, so there were not many rice paddies and there was not much rice production, with only a harvest per year. Orchards, tilled on dry farmlands, were more popular at that time. Produce that could endure the dry and heat such as sugar canes and sweet potatoes was grown by farmers. As rice and canes could be sold at a much better price, farmers made their profits on rice and canes and made sweet potatoes their staple food. |
