英文摘要 | Among twentysome editions available at the present from the Ming and Ching Dynasties of the book "Ying-ya Sheng-Lan" by ma Huan, a travelog about the seven voyages of Cheng Ho during 1404 and 1433, there are only two editions that contain a poem, commonly called the "Voyage Recording Poem". This poem has 48 lines, each having seven Chinese characters. It so happens that the very same poem also appears in the first part of Chapter 100 of the Ming-dynasty historical novel, "San-pao t'ai-chien hsia hsi-yang Yen-Yi", written by Luo Mao-teng. This historical novel was composed in 1597, about 150 years later than the book by Mr. Ma. Furthermore, it is well-known to scholars that Luo borrowed heavily from Ma's book in writing his novel. Thus, it has always been assumed without question that Luo copied Ma's poem into his novel, without acknowledgement. After a detailed and careful analysis of existing documents, comparisons of the contents of these two books, and writing styles and backgrounds of these two authors, we have come to the conclusion that the original author of the poem was Luo and that the editions of Ma's book containing the poem copied it from Luo's novel around 1617 or thereafter. With the passage of more that 350 years, it would be naturally difficult for anyone to suspect such confusion of authorship. In ancient China and Europe, such copying was actually quite commonplace. Normally, it would not be difficult to establish the real authorship of the poem, except that other aspects of Cheng Ho's treasure ships might also have been copied from Luo's novel. Hence, the firm establishment of the real authorship of the poem has become a rather important issue and demands our special concern and attention. |
