中文摘要 | 資料庫與網際網路的結合已突破以往受地理區隔限制之研究,對於語言教學研究而言,結合資料庫與網際網路提供ESL(English as Second Language)及EFL(English as Foreign Language)兩大語言教學研究族群溝通的機制。 |
英文摘要 | In many fields of research, the development of shared databases available through the internet has enabled collaborations that were previously impractical because of geographical constraints. In language teaching research, shared databases could be invaluable as links between the ESL and EFL research communities. The Teaching English EXTradepartmentally Survey (TEXTS) database, which characterizes discipline-specific classroom English usage, could potentially work as such an on-line link. The TEXTS database currently describes classroom English usage in 163 courses offered at Da-Yeh University (DYU), where it has been used to study the potential benefits of university-level EFL content-based language instruction. The courses in the TEXTS database belong to the DYU Liberal Arts Center and four departments: English Language (EL), Visual Communication (VC), Industrial Engineering (IE) and International Business Management (IBM). With appropriate modifications, TEXTS could be used to describe courses outside of DYU. This paper discusses the biggest challenge facing the TEXTS developers: remodeling the database to make it more user-friendly and richer in detail so it can serve the needs of researchers with diverse goals. We draw upon both the current TEXTS data and the past experiences of data collectors to demonstrate two points: 1.English usage in TEXTS EL courses is more varied and complex than in TEXTS non-EL courses. 2.Because the TEXTS model is not well suited to this diversity and complexity, data collection for EL courses has been more error prone than for non-EL courses. A model that better accommodates EL courses would better accommodate TEXTS courses from all departments. For this purpose, we propose a three-layer object-oriented model (OOM) of classroom English usage. This model will more intelligently handle detailed information specific to a given type of English usage. Moreover, it will be more transparent because the upper layer better reflects the real world of classroom English usage and the detailed information is encapsulated in the lower layers. The OOM is the basis for a future, internet accessible version of TEXTS that will allow researchers outside DYU to access existing data and input new data on courses offered in their home environments. |
