中文摘要 | 對研讀小說的東、西方之大學部及研究生而言,朵莉思.蕾辛之鉅著《金黃色筆記本》始終是一部艱澀難懂的作品。複雜且前衛的小說結構固然為其因;然而,該小說所涉及的新舊小說美學問題更是棘手。無後者之相關知識背景難能理解前者之深層含意。本論文就筆者多年教授後設小說之經驗對此小說提出教學淺見,期相互切磋以求精進。教學之技巧與策略可分為四步驟,分述於本文之四章節:(1)再現論與模擬論之起源,(2)模擬論之實踐--寫實主義,(3)模擬論與理型論之除咒,以及(4)《金黃色筆記本》之後設小說特質分。此教學法旨在引導學生理解蕾辛之後設小說《金黃色筆記本》並非僅是虛浮的本文雜耍;相反地,該小說藉由特殊的創新結構替窮途末路的小說形式與美學挹注活力。 |
英文摘要 | The structure of Doris Lessing's The Golden Notebook has paused as a labyrinth both to the undergraduate and graduate students. Having taught metafiction for years, I recognize that an introduction simply to the nature and objective of metafiction does not help students fully understand how and why Lessing makes the novel proper speak through its form and, by extension, the significance and seriousness of metafiction as a literary movement. To give my students a comprehensive perspective, I guide them to approach The Golden Notebook by the folowing four steps--entitled namely as The Origin of Reprseentation and Mimesis, Realism as a Practice of Mimesis, Iconoclasm of Mimesis and The Golden Notebook as a Metafictional Text. First, background knowledge about the origin of representationism and mimesis that can be traced as far back as to the philosophies of Plato and Aristotle is given to help students understand how the conceptions of the Absolute Form and Rality are conceived. Then,Henry James' short story "The Real Thing" and his essay "The Art of Fiction" are provided as examples to explain realism as a practice of mimesis and representation; in addition, Walter Allen's and Ian Watt's assertions, respectively in The English Novel and The Rise of the Novel, about the referential function of language and the authentic transcription of reality and truth are pointed out as man's conventional presumption as well as illusion about minesis. Thirdly, an introduction to Ferdinare de Saussure's and Jacques Derrida's revolutionary linguistic concepts will initiate the students to question the prseupposed competence of language as a transparent representative medium. The iconoclastic ideas about "reality" contended in alain Robbe-Grillet's For a New Novel and Virginia Woolf's "Modern Fiction" shall prepare students for the negation of the existence of an extra-textual reality as an object for copying and imitating. Moreover, Linda Hutcheon's Narcissistic Narrative: the Metafictional Paradox serves as the guideline to help students understand the nature and objective of metafiction. Ultimately, I will guide the students to understand the nature and objective of metafiction. Notebook to appreciate how Lessing constructs this "enigmatic novel," to borrow Jenny Taylor's words, in order to challenge the realistic tenet about mimesis, to innovate a new novelistic form, to rejuvenate novel as a genre and finally, to proclaim the ubiquitous constructiveness of "reality" in and of text. |
