英文摘要 | Most of the Truku residents in Shexi Village, Hualian deeply believe that power of gaya, a mythical punishing force under the control of ancestral spirits, has absolutely dominated people's lives although they had conversed to Christianity or Catholics for nearly half a century. A common sense says: relevant families will encounter continuing misery if a young couple had sexual relation but without informing their parents. People thus live in fear of their lives under forebear's supernatural intimidation. Whenever any serious accident or unusual illness was happened in a family, adults spontaneously suspected children's social behavior out of the household. The facts of breaking taboo of sexual intercourse among teenagers were easily to be found by adults' never-ending investigation. Then a pig-slaughtering banquet must be practiced in advance, a wedding for that "foul couple" was coming next. The appearance of high percentage (26.72%) of teenager marriage in Shexi was by reason of this particular socio-cultural element. All they did was to beg for forgiveness from ancestors. People living in such a community might be able to solve "cultural problem", i.e., to pacify spirits' anger without difficulty, but tragically-oriented "social problems", such as divorce, adultery, drunkenness, car accidents, personal violence, and unemployment, almost immediately terrified everyone thereafter. In a word, the traditional way of behaving oneself in connecting to ancestoral or spiritual world is still playing a powerful role in shaping Shexi's daily life. |
