英文摘要 | This paper explores the historical and current significance of the" nightly visitation”(an-fang 暗訪) exorcistic rite performed every year since 1912 on the 30th day of the 4th lunar month at the Abbey of Ksitigarbha (Ti-stang An 地藏庵), located in the city of Hsin-chuang 新莊 just south of Taipei. The Abbey was founded in 1757, and features a joint cult to the Bodhisattva Kistigarbha (Ti-tsang wang p’u-sa 地藏王菩薩) and a host king known as Ta-chung Ye 大眾爺 (literally ”Lord of the Hordes”). The an-fang ritual, which aims at expelling the demonic forces wich cause clamities, was first stanged during the early years of the Japanses Occupation (1895-1945) as a response to frequent outbreaks of contagious diseases which afflicted the people of northern Taiwan, and continues to be performed today. In order to determine the factors underlying the staging of Hsin-chuang's an-fang ritual, I first trace the socioeconomic history of Hsin-chuang during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. I then examine the indentities of the members of Hisn-chuang's elite who sponsored the an-fang's staging, and their motives for doing so. The bulk of the paper is devoted to describing the an-fang as performed today, the focus being on the performers (known as the "Leaders of Officials and Generls" or kuan-chiang shou 官將首), and the ritual masters (Fa-shih 法師) who lead them. Special attention is devoted to the eye-opening (k’ai-kuang 開光) ritual wchich all trouped members must undergo before the an-fang can commence. |
