英文摘要 | In the 1920s, American piano music had an extensive development both .in notation and playing techniques. Composers such as Henry Cowell, Charles Ives and John Cage actively engaged in such new endeavors. Especially developing new techniques to produce unique sounds, these composers manipulated piano strings, or used various foreign objects among strings. George Crumb not only inherited this tradition, but proved that the piano is the most possible instrument to produce various tone color. His Five Pieces for Piano was wrinen in 1962, applying the extension piano technique developed in the first half of the 20th century by American composers. The extension technique Crumb used included strings' pizzicato, harmonics, muting and damping, glissando, and tremolo. He also placed paper clips on the strings to produce a metallic vibrating sound. Crumb values the visual and gestural elements in compositional and performance stages of music making. The ways that he uses the thematic materials and designs the musical form offer pianists a visual understanding of his music. Meanwhile, by using the extension technique, performers should create a visual effect which influences the aural impression of the audience. Five Pieces for Piano is the first mature work by Crumb. He successfully brings the piano to a new height performing both aurally and visually through the use of extension technique. |
