英文摘要 | The idea of the "West" is a central theme in American mythology and the American mind. Just as the nation itself has expanded and developed in the course of its history, the notion of the West has evolved. The multiculturalism that characterizes America has given rise to a wide variety of voices. Among the many voices that have reinterpreted the West and the Western hero is that of Willa Cather. The present study has as its primary purpose the creation of a new framework through which to examine her writing, i.e., by examining her heroes in the context of the political and social vision of America in the thought of Thomas Jefferson. Cather's own vision of the American pioneer represents, in this writer's view, a continuation of Jefferson's pastoral ideal and the development of the West. Jefferson and Cather, native Virginians both, idealized the life of the individual farmer and landowner. They saw these Americans as the repositories of virtus and as those individuals who could most fully realize the natural rights emblazoned in perpetuity in the Declaration of Independence penned by Jefferson himself: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Although several of Cather's works are referred to, the focus of the present work has been relegated to "Neighbor Rosicky". Relationships to Jefferson's ideas of personal freedom and happiness and the lifestyle of the farmer are explored and examined. Cather, however, goes beyond the social vision of Jefferson and endows her character with a freedom that has a religious quality. To better understand this perspective and her own choice of a "Slavic" hero, several Slavic writers thatCather herself was influenced by, have been referred to. The ultimate ideal she leaves the reader with is one of an American Western landscape sanctified by the spiritual beauty of the enlightened pioneer. |
