英文摘要 | The real name of author Meng-Yao was Tzung-Chen Yang, who was the first author to combine both identity of scholar and bestseller novelist. She was the most productive female author in the fifties (1950-1959). Majority of her works had main theme about love. Most of them were published in series in famous periodicals in Taiwan and Hong-Kong, before publishing into books. Therefore, this study would view her as the representative of the early period of Taiwan's romantic literature development. This study had her nineteen medium-sized and long romantic novels as study subjects, to discuss her way of romantic writing. Meng-Yao was conscious with the concept of female sovereignty, and yet, this study found that she never wrote her romantic novels from that point of view. It could be that love really has no relationship with this concept of female sovereignty. She admired love, and saw it as "god's greatest benevolence". However, she also emphasized the importance of restricting sensual desires. In her writings, those females who couldn't control their passion or those who toyed with love mostly ended up losing their fortunes and honors. She set up many plots of subliming passion to sacrifice or contribution, where those characters who understood the true meaning of sacrifice or contribution would naturally tasted the sweet fruit of love. In these novels, she repeatedly described the contradictions and struggles when the characters faced the conflicts between primary sensual desires and the social norms; the suffering and self-examination when the characters faced the tortures of their lovers; and the regrets of selfishness and heartlessness of badly treating their lovers. She described these emotions so very appropriate and real. The sensitive descriptive details of these inner emotions of her characters were the best accomplishment of her works during this period. |
