英文摘要 | A worker's body is a topic generally ignored in both labor process theory and feminist studies. I propose a theoretical typology of "bodily labor" in examining service labor process as that involves multiple power dynamics other than capital-labor struggle. In an ethnographic case study of cosmetics saleswomen in Taiwan, I observed different and even contradictory labor control practices involved in their labor process: employers aim to maximize the exploitation of workers' labor, but also attempt to maintain saleswomen's beauty; employers try to standardize worker's interactions with customers, but also allow saleswomen certain flexibility and autonomy, Cosmetics saleswomen are thus performing multiple dimensions of bodily labor. Their bodies offer physical strength to conduct labor activities (the exploited body), provide humble service in their interaction with customers (the disciplined body), display desirable commodities and images of beauty (the mirroring body), and deliver professional domination over customers (the communicative body). Gender relations and ideology also significantly formulate the constitution of work content and labor regime. Gender differences are reproduced in differential assignments of bodily labor for female and male salespeople, and institutionalized in the sexually segregated workplace. Cosmetics saleswomen negotiate their gender and class identities in their labor process, and develop an invisible resistance to maintain their autonomy and interests in everyday life. |
