英文摘要 | This article reviews the causes of paper defects arisen from poor paper dimensional stability, and the application of ultrasonic technology in diagnosing paper dimensional stability. Reasons for dimensional instability of paper and method of quantifying dimensional stability using hygroexpansion coefficient (HEC) are further elaborated. Detailed review is provided for paper defect analysis on in-plane paper defects including hygroexpansion and drying shrinkage; as well as hygroexpansion and out-of-plane defects, such as curl, wrinkle, cockle, grainy edges, twist and warp. Generalized description on the principle of ultrasonic technology and its on-machine application is also given. It is suggested that better dimensional stability can be achieved by adjusting headbox, press section and drying section in sequence. The Douliu Mill of Long-Cheng Paper Co. employed a tensile stiffness orientation (TSO) instrument to improve the dimensional stability of its products. A 4-stage plan was undertaken which included training, status assessment, process adjustment and review and evaluation. After 6 months of devoted effort, customer complains regarding poor-registration of multicolor printing and after press shrinkage dropped to zero while break down time was effectively reduced, machine speed gained 5% and pulp cost per ton of paper reduced US$12. |
