英文摘要 | Amy Tan's first novel The Joy Luck Club was published in 1989. It inscribes sixteen stories telling lives of four Chinese mothers and their four American born daughters. The structure of the novel moves from the mothers' points of view to the daughters' and back again, contrasting the backgrounds, in which the two generations grow up, and the lives of the East and West. The center of each story is ferocious mother-daughter love. Though fights and conflicts are inevitable in their daily lives, formidable true love makes them seem trivial. Marriage is also an important theme in The Joy Luck Club. There is a sharp contrast between old marriages in China and the marriages in the United States. Amy Tan not only criticizes arranged marriages as ridiculous and inhumane in old China, but is also skeptical of the marriages in the United States. |
