英文摘要 | "Should we teach literature in aforeign language classroom?" This has been an undecided question for many years. Usually, literature is thought as a static language/or re moved from the utterance of daily language. However, in this study, the author tries to explore another close relationship between literature and language instruction. Chinese students in Taiwan learn English as a "foreign" language. They do not have the natural learning environment and rarely have the chance to "see" or "use" English outside the classroom. Most of the Chinese EFL students are frustrated by the vast amount of English vocabulary in reading. They proclaim: "We need more vocabulary to improve our English reading. " In this study, the author experimentally taught college level students "Western Literature "for one year. In the curriculum planning, students would first watch the video about the work and then read the written materials having a discussion. Students also were required to have a group presentation--to present their critical thoughts and reflection about the video and literature work. At the end of the school year, students filled out a questionnaire regarding their opinions and attitudes toward the integration of literature into language instruction. The results offer valuable references to the significance of literature instruction in an EFL classroom, especially in the aspects of increasing vocabulary size, reading comprehension, critical thinking, and cultural understanding. |
