英文摘要 | For the past forty-five years, the works of J.D. Salinger have been a widespread topic for literary discussion not only in America but also in many parts of the world. Among all the causes of Salinger's universal popularity, his capability of presenting the interaction between adults and children as well as children's psychology is the most remarkable one. This thesis explores the peculiar conducts of Holden Caulfield in J.D. Salinger's The catcher in the Rye, using the psychological theory, namely, the Development of Personality, of the Swiss psychologist Carl Jung. The analysis goes back to Holden's family life, childhood, and school life, resulting in the findings that the whole novel actually presents many possible factors, among parents, teachers, and Holden, that make him such a peculiar boy. In conclusion, we find that Jungian viewpoints help us have a better understanding of Salinger's writing intention and also rectify some critics' misunderstanding of his works. |
