英文摘要 | In the past decades, Taiwan has experienced a significant outmigration of highly skilled or educated workers--a brain drain--to the United States. Chen (1995) shows that sixty percent of Taiwanese immigrants in the United States have master's degrees and seventy-two percent of immigrants reports that they hold managerial or professional jobs by using 1990 U.S. Census Survey data. Researchers have documented the crucial impact of brain drain on the economices of both receiving and sending countries. The paper examines the relationship between the outmigration of brain drain from Taiwan to the United States between 1950 and 1988. The empirical results show that unemployment rates in Taiwan have a negative, though not significant, effect on the decisions of the students studying abroad to return and have a positive and significant effect on the decision of Taiwan's unviersity graduates to go abroad. |
