英文摘要 | Should the reader look for the author's intention when reading a literary work? Is it only after the so-called "author's intention" is found when a literary work can be interpreted and enjoyed? These were some of the popular topics for literary studies during the eighties. The Gadamerians hold that a literary work should be open to interpretation while E.D. Hirsch considers the retrieval of the author's intention of great importance. This paper traces the Hirsch-Gadamerians controversy back to the fifties when Stevenson and Wimsatt and Breadsley had a similar argument. By using a Chinese seal face and one of Dickenson's poems as examples, the author attempts to demonstrate the fact that the so-called "author's intention" is not something constant, something that never changes. Instead, it changes as the reader views the work from different angles primarily because of the instability of language itself; thus, different interpretations are possible. |
