英文摘要 | In this paper, I compare four widely used learners' dictionaries focusing on their treatment of English usage and their attitudes toward it. The four learners' dictionaries I have chosen for discussion and comparison are the Cambridge International Dictionary (1995) , the Collins COBUILD English Dictionary (1987), the Longman Dictionary of English Language and Culture (1992), and the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary of Current English (4th edition, 1989). All of them contain rich information about matters of usage and registers and make efforts to provide learners with guidance to good usage. There are approximately 80 usage items discussed in this paper. They have been chosen for discussion because they are frequently dealt with in usage books, handbooks, and college dictionaries and known to be controversial, troublesome, disputable ones for learners of English and/or native speakers of English. Based on a close examination of usage notes and/or usage information contained in these four learners' dictionaries, this paper concludes that all of them have fulfilled their duty as learners' dictionaries--not only recording the way the English language is used today but also establishing some yardstick or standard to temper the whims and fashions of usage. They are bout language recorders and lawgivers. |
