英文摘要 | This study proposes a tectonic model of crustal subduction and exhumation to explain the phenomena of an aseismic belt beneath the Eastern Central Range of Taiwan. The aseismic belt, generally parallel to the strongly convergent boundary between the Eurasian and Philippine Sea plates in Taiwan, is very unusual because it is in sharp contrast to the very seismically active neighboring areas. In order to understand the tectonic implications of this aseismic belt, the author first reviews a variety of geophysical and geological evidence including seismic tomogfaphy, fault plane solutions, heat flow, crustal deformation, strain, uplift and erosion rates, geomorphology and results of isotopic studies. The tectonic history in the Taiwan region suggests that the continental margin of the Eurasian plate has been slightly subducted beneath the Philippine Sea plate. The light continental crust of the former was dragged downward by its dense mantle lithosphere. In the meantime the buoyancy forces of the subducted continental crust built up with depth. Eventually, the exhumation occurred when the buoyancy forces increased enough to produce decoupling at the base of the crust and then failure in front of the subduction zone. This model can be used to account for the absence of seismicity beneath the Eastern Central Range due to higher temperature within the exhumed material, which is considered generally consistent with most of the geophysical and geological evidence reviewed in this paper. |
