英文摘要 | To ensure the United States's national security, the Reagan administration pursued a strategic relationship with the Mainland China to counter any growing Soviet threat. To sustain this U.S.-China strategic relationship, President Ronald Reagan made significant concessions to Beijing over Taiwan, the most notable being the 1982 decisions not to sell the Republic of China (ROC) the FX replacement fighter. The question of whether to sell an advanced airplane to Taiwan appeared, on the surface, to be an innocuous issue. However, leaders in Beijing regarded the FX issue as a crucial litmus test for future U.S.-China relations. The same type of symbolism was attached to the sale by Taipei which viewed the failure to sell as a sign of abandonment. As a result, the Reagan adminstration was caught on the horns of a dilemma. |
