英文摘要 | Rapid advance in science and technologe has compelled increasingspecialization. Medicine is no exception. The total corpus of acquiredknowledge has grown so great of recent years that a physician can now onlycompass a much smaller fraction of it. In order to give in to the pressure ofknowledge acquisition, the humanities have been gradually squeezed out ofthe medical curriculum over the past several decades. The end result is thedehuminization of medicine. Medicine is the oldest "learned" professionand has been studded with achievements of illustrous physicians who arebroadly educated and cultured. The humanities and medicine have to gohand in hand. Dehumanization of medicine, therefore, already has had aprofound impact on the nature of health care and on individuals and thesociety as a whole. Medical educators of Taiwan should restore the integrityof the two-year premed program by infusing a massive dose of humanitiescourses. |
