英文摘要 | The study attempts to analyze the relationships between the properties of Chinese words and Chinese dyslexia. As shown in linguistic literature, Chinese and alphabetic words are of many salient differences in orthography, phonology, and semantics. With these differences, the researcher was driven to investigate, by analyzing and comparing findings from psycholinguistic studies, possible differences in nature, cause, type, characteristic, and prevalence that might exist between Chinese and alphabetic dyslexics. The investigation first showed many specific properties of Chinese words in orthography, phonology, and semantics, including structural complexity, structural type, lack of grapheme-phoneme correspondence rule, character-syllabe correspondence, word tone, word ambiguity, word-boundary ambiguity, and distribution of word meaning. Following the above the investigation reviewed many studies of Chinese word recognition as to how structural, phonological, and semantic properties of Chinese words affect word recognition. It shows that while many processes and phenomena observed in word recognition were reported similar in Chinese and alphabetic languages, word recognition in Chinese do exhibit differences in response to influences of the specific properties of Chinese words. Based on the language-specific representation, it was suggested that the properties of Chinese words might have implications to Chinese dyslexia. In relation to the nature, cause, type, characteristic, and prevalence of dyslexia, specific phonological-, visual-, and semantic-processing deficits that may occur in Chinese dyslexia, but not in alphabetic dyslexia, were inferred theoretically, such as fewer dysphonetic readers in Chinese, more severe reading difficulties in Chinese dyseidetic readers, and more reliance on sentential context in Chinese dyslexics. |
