英文摘要 | This paper examines the following hypothesis: Whoever has a grip on the political power of a country is in charge of the formulations and interpretations of its history; moreover, such formulations and interpretations of history are meant to solidify rulers' authority and power, To speak more concretely, a government legitimizes itself by offering specific history in educational system, especially when students are in the period of compulsory education. Historical interpretations always serve the functions of cultivating people to accept and identify with the current political system, and thereby help lay the foundations for the existence and continuity of the authority as well as sustain the power of the rulers. This paper begins with Max Weber's theory on the origins of a authority. It then compares the contents of history textbooks for junior high school students across the Taiwan Strait to test the previous hypothesis. The foci of comparison include 1) attribution of cauuses for various ancient Chinese dynastic failunes, 2) descriptions and interpretations of the Taiping Revolution, 3) the attribution of causes for the Nationalists' failure in the civil war against the Communists following World War II. After these comparisons, the paper points out that mainland China's history textbooks vigorously emphasize the political ideology of a communist society, including people's revolution, class conflict and struggle, and the egalitarian ideals of a socialistic state in distribution. On the other hand, democracy has taken its root in Taiwan. That is, Taiwan government has obtained its mandate to govern through free and fair, popular elections. Therefore, using distorted history to legitimize itself is no longer needed. Thus, compared to Chia ng Kai-shek and his son's eras, Taiwan's government is more willing to reveal the truth of the historical failure of civil war against Communists. A brief conclusion is offered at the end of the paper. |
