英文摘要 | The purpose of the current study was to examine differences in auditory discrimination ability between sighted and visually impaired individuals. In Experiment 1, different background noises and increasing target sound volumes were manipulated to investigate performance of visually impaired and sighted individuals on discrimination of aurally presented words. In Experiment 2, an environmental-sound discrimination task was used to test quantity of simultaneous sounds that could be discriminated. Results from Experiment 1 indicated that a 25% increase in sound level was needed for sighted individuals to obtain 80% accuracy, while visually impaired individuals only required a 15% increase to achieve 70% accuracy. Results from Experiment 2 suggested that auditory discrimination among visually impaired participants was better than that of sighted participants. These results provide a potential starting point for industrial and interface designers to improve upon electronic speech recognition products, which enable visually impaired individuals to effectively process auditory information. |
