英文摘要 | The purpose of this study is to investigate the influences of the highly-educated students' academic and living adjustments on career preference. A nation-wide survey was conducted by collecting data form the single research population (i.e., Taiwanese graduate students who are currently studying in American graduate schools) but studying in different areas of the U.S. A total of 319 students (181 males and 138 females) came from 35 different schools completed a two-page English questionnaire which contained three individual scales: Attitude toward American Society, Academic Adaptation, and Language Adaptation, along with several items regarding background information. Data was analyzed by a two-stage confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) provided by the EQS program (Bentler, 1989). Results indicated that these students in general held a positive attitudes toward American society, had fairly good adaptation on academic learning, and felt good in language use except speaking. Around one-fourth of students tended to go back their home country (Taiwan) after graduation, especially for non-science major and female students. Results of full model CFA suggested an indirect effect of academic and language adaptation on career preferences via the attitudinal mediation. The major factor for influencing career preferences is people's perceived good future on their own fields, instead of their perceptions on American economic conditions. Finally, the research limitations and implications were discussed. |
