英文摘要 | The paper seeks to explore Bernard Malamud's humanistic vision and his faith in the possibility of human beings from The Natural, The Assistant and The Fixer. Malamud is concerned about the living situation and the struggle of ordinary men in the modern world. Malamud is also troubled by the degeneration of human beings in the modern world and he strongly rejects being engaged in such a devaluation. He gives values to human beings and affirms man's ability to renew himself in his works. The Assistant and The Fixer demonstrate his belife that the life of human beings can renew itself and yearn for a meaningful life. The value system carried within Malamud's The Natural, The Assistant and The Fixer has been broadly humanistic, rather than narrowly religious. Furthermore, Malamud is concerned with the liberation of the individual human spirit and respect in human relationships. In fact, Malamud is a meliorist. He is optimistic about the future. The subject and theme of Malamud's works are universal. The humanistic values in his works prevent Malamud from being an ethnic or mythic writer. In the sense, he is the writer of meliorism. |
