英文摘要 | The main domains of linguistics have been syntax, semantics, and phonology etc. In recent years, alongside the introduction of Communicative Language Teaching, Discourse Analysis has become one of the core disciplines of linguistics. The tern "Discourse Analysis" is very ambiguous among various disciplines. However, the commonest definition of it is that to interpret a text or an utterance one should touch not only the within-sentence level but also the beyond-sentence level as well, and that language and situation are inseparable. Therefore to really understand what one says, it is necessary to take into consideration the knowledge outside linguistics. This paper mainly aims to conduct an analysis comparing President Abraham Lincoln's "Gettysburg Address" and "Dr. Sun Yat-sen's Last Will". The main similarity between the two passages is: The emotives in the two passages are quite the same: solemn and formal. On the other hand, there are some differences between the two. One of them is the verb tense and aspect: in the former passage it is past tense → present tense→ future tense, while in the latter, present perfect →Future tense (past tense). It is not difficult to interpret this difference. As is known, Lincoln was at the crest of his presidency when he wrote the address. However Dr. Sun Yat-sen was dying when his Last Will was being prepared. To a dying person "now" is a void and will be disappearing anytime. Deeper and systematic investigation into the field of discourse analysis is suggested by the author of this paper. |
