英文摘要 | The trumpeter whiting (Sillago maculate) is a common fish in Moreton Bay, an important fishing ground in Queensland, Australia. This species is harvested in large quantities each year by amateur and professional fishermen. In this study, monthly samples were collected from two sampling sites from June 1990 to May 1992. Commercial catch records were analysed for the status of whiting fisheries in the bay. An estimate of more than 200 tonnes of S. maculate had been fished annually since the 1960s, but the stocks of S. maculate apparently remain healthy and abundant. Based on the results of fecundity, spawning season, and spawning grounds together with suggestions by other studies, the factors involved in sustainability of the stocks in Moreton Bay are recognized as follows: 1. high reproductive capacity, 2. protracted spawning season and multiple spawnings, 3. spawning grounds close to the oceanic side of the bay, 4, undisturbed juvenile grounds, and 5. ability of population recovery in response to exploitation. |
