英文摘要 | The United States government terminated diplomatic relations with the Republic of China (ROC) on January, 1, 1979. In the meantime, the USA and the people's Republic of China (PRC) agreed to recognize each other and to establish diplomatic relations. This announcement was a great shock to the people on Taiwan. The great shock resulted from the concern about the loss of a major ally—the United States. Based on Schillinger's (1989) finding, "survival" is one of the important determinants of a press system and is the most fundamental motive for both the nation and the press. Therefore, the assumption in this study is that mass media—meaning newspapers in this study –are supposed to reflect the government's foreign policies and political inclinations. The purpose in this study in to determine if there is any significant difference between the news coverage concerning the ROC-USA relationship before and after 1979. Samples of the United Daily News and the Central Daily News were selected by using a table of random numbers. By limiting the sampling error within 0.05, a random sample of 310 issues—155 issues from the United Daily News, and 155 issues form the United Daily News respectively—was chosen form the population of 2920. Concerning the reliability of the category system, a preliminary sample of message (10 news items from the United Daily News in 1977) was tested for composite reliability (i.e., the coding reliability). The average of interjudge agreement was 0.783. The composite reliability score is 0.92 (92%). In all, 877 news items were coded in March 1990 based on the categories that had been developed. A total of five variables were used to evaluate each news item. The variables included: 1) item length, 2) news source, 3) signal or symbol, 4) subject matter, and 5) tone (positive, negative or neutral). In conclusion, newspaper coverage concerning the ROC-USA relationship did not change after the termination of diplomatic relationships between the nations, according to the findings in this study. As a small island, Taiwan needs support from other countries, especially leading democratic nations like the United States. One the other hand, the U. S. realized Taiwan's value in its military strategy in the Western Pacific. Therefore, none of these nations could ignore the existence of each other. This can partially explain why the news coverage concerning the ROC-USA relationship did not significantly change after the termination of formal relationships (i. e., diplomatic relations). |
