英文摘要 | The island of Taiwan is characterized by the shallow Taiwan strait to the west and a deep-water region off the eastern Taiwan coast. Off its southwestern coast, Taiwan has a narrow shelf that is bordered by water depths of more than 3,000 meters at the northern end of the abyssal plain of the South China Sea. The continental shelf off southwestern Taiwan is the natural seaward prolongation of the Coastal Plain Province and the southern Central Range of Taiwan. It is a relatively shallow and narrow platform less than 20 km wide, and immediately off the southern Central Range, is about 2 km wide. The shelf extends from the southern tip of the island of Taiwan northwestwards where it merges into the broad Taiwan Strait shelf with a length of about 150 km. the sea floor of the shelf is relativly smooth, but locally irregular topography occurs off the Hengchun Peninsula. Fine-grained shelly terrigenous sands are mainly restricted to the inner shelf, and muddy sediments are distributed on the outer shelf. The shelfbreak, separating the shelf from slope, ranges from 120 to 170 m in depth. The Kaoping slope extends from the shelfbreak along the southwestern Taiwan coast to the northern limit of the abyssal plain of the south China Sea. The Kaoping slope merges westward into the continental slope off South China. The slope shows both relatively irregular topography and smooth sloping surfaces. The Kaoping slope can divided into an upper slope and a lower slope by the 1,000 m isobath. Submarine canyons and channels occur mainly on the upper slope. The slope floor is mainly covered by silts and clays derived from drainages on the island of Taiwan. |
