英文摘要 | Addressing the implications of the Mateson Report on Academic Health Science Centers for public libraries, the author emphasizes that, while his library has made extensive use of technology, this is not desirable for most public libraries. Public libraries are not asked by their users to provide vital information. Most reference questions are directional or can be answered from only a few sources. Similarly, interlibrary loans are not a big factor, accounting for less than 1% of transactions. Thus library systems for resource sharing are not particularly important. Mostly the users want to browse among the books for what they want. Technology should be viewed in terms of alternative opportunity costs: most users would be better served if money spent on technology were used to improve the collection in the library nearest the user. Medical librarians might also ask if resources might be better used to provide immediate access to desired materials. |
