英文摘要 | This study proposed an evaluation model for small-keyboard graphemic input systems for Chinese characters. Four input systems were analyzed and compared. They are WANG's three corner coding method, Multitech's Chinese-alphabet input method, CDC's top-bottom coding method, and the simplified indexing method developed by Kiang (1983). Five experiments were conducted to examine the relative efficiency of these systems at various stages. Experiment 1 measured the degree of congruency between the system-prescribed encoding and the user'sintuition. Experiment 2 measured the degree of difficulty of graphemic decomposition. Experiment 3 measured the amount of training required to master the feature-code correspondenceand the speed of code generation given the feature. Experiment 4 measured the amount of training required to master the encoding rules and the speed of character encoding. Experiment 5 measured the general efficiency of text handling. In general, the three-corner coding methodand the simplified indexing method showed greater efficiency than the other two systems. Atotal of ten measures were obtained and three of them were recommended to serve as predictorsof the input speed of a given system: Y=4.8739-.0058X1+ .6817X2-.0223X3, where Y representsthe average reaction time of character encoding, XI represents the total unmber of featuresadopted by the system, X2 represents the average reaction time of code generation, and X3 represents the score on system-user coding congruency. |
