英文摘要 | Existing Medicine Bag icon is not uniform. Similar symbols which represent different meaningsin different hospitalsmight cause confusion. Due to aging, the elderly people often experience perception and cognitive degradation. Therefore, the design of medication bag icon should not only put the needs of the elderly into consideration when discussing characteristics of medicine bag icon, but also create some icon combinations that are suitable for both elder people and other majority of people. The purpose of this study is to investigate a medicine bag icon combination, which is suitable for the elderly in order to reduce inaccurate use of medication and to enhance the elderpeople’s medical compliance. According to the results of the questionnaire and interviews, users haveformed their own habits in terms of drug consumption and usage following current medicine bag icons, that is, the icons that include natural objects used to representthe time of drug consumption were highly accepted. For example, the rooster icon demonstrated taking medicine in the mornings, the sun represented noon, whereas the moon icon meant evenings and individual-lying-in-bed explained medicine usage before bed.Thisicon combination was in most consistency with the symbols used internationally. Restricted to the elde's vision, conditions such aswhen the graphical color was too similar to its background color, the opening of the crescent symbol was not obvious, or when the segment blanks weretoo narrow could all increase the difficulty for the elders to read. The current difficulty to the design of icons was not the users’ ability to identify the symbols but whether the icon-meaning association matched users’ perception to be considered as applicable icons used on medicine bags. This study suggested the followings in ordertolink the corresponding signifier and the signified: 1. The graphical features should be easily identified and associatedwith what they represented; 2. Avoid misappropriation or use of illustrations that are vague in meanings, or contain multiple implications; 3. Modify and uniform existing icons, and avoid excessively innovative icons or symbols to reduce patients’ burden to adapt to different symbols. |
