中文摘要 | 在廣泛的煉金術( Alchemy)概念下,中國煉金術具備屬於自身特色的文化系統。東晉葛洪《抱朴子內篇》記載的相關內容,是可以一窺早期中國煉金術的重要著作。本文係就《內篇》中有關煉金術的思維與技術,進行探討。《史記》提到「丹砂可化黃金」獲致長生效果的事件,多少揭示出中國煉金術的原始信念,《內篇》所載「黃白術」、「金丹法」即黃金與白銀的煉化之術,係延續此一信念,以丹砂為關鍵物質,混以多種礦物熔煉後,產生某種看似黃金或白銀的合金,並透過祭儀行為,賦與神聖性後,出現成仙等神異現象,並長生不老。因為「金丹」是中國煉金術的極致,故「煉丹術」就成為中國煉金術的代表性稱呼。 中國煉金術深具宗教性特徵,並非單純地以物質科學就可以理解,這是人類心靈對長生不老的深切渴望,從而轉化為具象的操作儀式,除模擬自然現象演變過程外,亦想像超時空意識者的存在,祈禱賜與神異力量,以扭轉世俗之醜,臻神聖之境。 |
英文摘要 | This essay is to examine the thinking and techniques of Chinese alchemy which were recorded in The Inner Chapters of the Baopuzi —an important book about early Chinese alchemy written by Ge Hong in the East Jin Dynasty. Chinese alchemy was a unique cultural system. The original belief of Chinese alchemy was more or less revealed in an event of creating gold elixirs of life from cinnabar disclosed in The Records of the Grand Historian . And this belief continued in the recording of alchemy skills of refinin "the Yellow and White" and "the Jindan" in The Inner Chapters. Cinnabar was the key substance used by alchemists. It was combined with a variety of minerals through burning and transformed into compound metal which looked like gold or silver. The compound metal was sanctified through rituals and was believed to have longevity and as an elixir of immortality. As "Jindan" were the ultimate representation of Chinese alchemy, Chinese alchemy received the other name "lian dan". Chinese alchemy was deeply related to religion. It was not merely science but specific ceremonies arising from human's profound quest of immortality. The practice of alchemy was not only a simulation of natural evolution but also an imagination of a higher power, praying for mystical powers to turn earthly imperfection into sacredness. |
