英文摘要 | In the late Ming dynasty, courtesans began to take part in the activities of literati and later played key roles in literary circles. This phenomenon influenced the development of literati culture. On the one hand, women, through their participation, could be equal to literary men and gradually become members of literary circles. On the other hand, they could become idols on whom literary men projected their personal and private emotions. The beauty and talent of women opened a conversation within literati culture, and inspired literati not only to face their own feelings but also stimulated various ways to feel and express emotion. Consequently, a unique amorous culture was formed that soon became an important element of Ming-Qing literati culture and one of the noticeable characteristics of the culture of Ming-Qing society. This articles focuses on the following issues: how women first became involved with literati culture and assumed a vital role in promoting its development; how female beauty opened a conversation with literati culture; what new cultural meanings were created through women's participation; how and when female beauty became a focus of literary men; what the influences were of female beauty on literati's lives and the development of literati culture; how literati appreciated and appraised female beauty; and whether literati expressed their emotions with any new or special forms and thus evolved different lifestyles. By examining these issues, this article explores the concrete and colorful nature of amorous culture and its meanings to and impact on literati culture, and enriches our understanding of literati culture. |
