It is stated in Fengshen Yanyi (The Investiture of the Gods or The Creation of the Gods) that Zhushen Mother is actually a general term referring to the three disciples of Tortue spirit, Yunxiao, Bixiao, and Qiongxiao, who are in charge of the conception and the naissance of human beings. In addition to Zhushen Mother, there are other goddesses assuming the duty of protecting mothers and children, including Lady Linshui, Tai Mountain Bixia Yuanjun. The former is also named as Zhusheng Mother in Taiwan. The present study aims at investigating the development of the belief in Zhushen Mother in Taiwan. The research methods include consulting ancient document and results of recent research, conducting field study, and cross-examining data of different sources. The paper presents the findings under four topics: (1) the origins of the Goddess, (2) the description of the statue figure, (3) the duties of the co-goddesses, the sisters of grandmother, and (4) temples and their rituals in worshipping the Goddess. |
