英文摘要 | Focusing on tangible objects and memories, this paper attempts to examine the dynamic life history of ethnographic collections, as well as to explore the embedded powers and dispersing essences evolving in the trajectory of object movements. According to a rough estimation, there are over 500 million ethnographic objects moving across cultural boundaries and spreading into about 900 museums or institutes all over the world. The ethnographic collections and museums emerged and developed in the second half of 19th century. Many cultural artifacts were collected from different regions of the world and used as specimens for the newly developed science of ethnology. The operations of cross cultural collecting were inseparable from the imperial and colonial projects. Thus, these objects inevitably reflect imbalanced power relations and display ruptured features. However, reconnecting objects with their original contexts and counter acting power relations are important issues in the 21st century. Based on two cases of transnational movement of Taiwan indigenous collections, this paper discusses the extended material life of ethnographic collections, the entangled imperial and colonial forces, and the related issues of memory politics and divergent identities. Finally, it seeks to examine the possibilities and complications of reconstructing transnational linkages between museum collections and the contemporary local agencies. |
