英文摘要 | This study attempts to facilitate critical reflection in student teachers through a series of activities. This study also analyzes different interactions observed in different formats of group discussion. A group of ten student teachers enrolled in a Language Teaching Methods course and participated in this study while teaching English as a foreign language to students from an elementary school in Taiwan. The training in this study consists of three parts: (A) the methods course, (B) practicum and (C) dialogues with others. Journal writings from each participant during the period of this study were analyzed to search for changes in written reflections over the time. Moreover, content of both types of group discussions were also recorded, transcribed, and analyzed to answer if the format of guided group mentor discussion sessions affects the interaction and content discussed among participants. The results show that the guided group mentor discussions along with field experience and in-class discussions on connecting pedagogical knowledge with personal experience indeed show some effect in fostering critical reflective teaching. Moreover, the on-line discussion forum seemed to generate more discussions and critical reflections among student teachers than the face-to-face one. In conclusion, this study illustrates the training in critical reflection in student teachers and highlights the potential value of using on-line instant messaging as a tool to enhance critical reflection in student teachers. |
