英文摘要 | This study investigated to what extent students of English-related graduate institutes master English synonyms. Based on a survey instrument consisting of 10 five-level multiple choice questions and 5 cloze test questions designed by the researchers, the study aims to gauge students’ mastery of English synonyms in terms of the first three cognitive abilities in Bloom’s cognitive taxonomy; namely, knowledge, comprehension and application. The data analysis is based on the written responses gathered from 30 Taiwanese graduate students currently enrolled in English-related MA programs. Regarding knowledge, the 30 participants were found to score an average of 11.87 points, or level 3, indicating that they possessed only moderate knowledge of the characteristics of English synonyms. As for the comprehension of the semantic differentials between the four targeted synonyms (i.e. purpose, objective, aim, and goal), students scored 12.27 points on the average, or level 3, suggesting a moderate comprehension of the differentiations between the four synonyms in their practical occurrences. Concerning the application of the four synonyms in 5 cloze contexts, only 12% of the participants provided the same synonyms in 5 specific contexts as the English writers did. They were also found to apply the four synonyms to the five contexts inconsistently. The findings of the study suggested that Taiwanese English majors at the graduate level lacked a basic mastery of English synonyms, which turns out to corroborate the Bloom’s cognitive taxonomy which holds that a solid application of a body of knowledge needs to be based on sufficient knowledge and comprehension of it. |
