英文摘要 | This paper focuses upon the utility and methodology of teaching culture in an EFL classroom. In the field of foreign language teaching there is a wide consensus that culture and cultural difference are important topics for consideration, given that students ultimate objective is generally to master a foreign language for the purpose of communication with cultural others. Unfortunately efforts to introduce culture into EFL have been hampered by widespread confusion over the concept of culture, and how it can be mobilized effectively in a classroom setting. It is possible to address this problem by borrowing and adapting understandings of culture from the discipline of Social/Cultural Anthropology and effectively deploy these understandings as a useful conceptual tool in an EFL teaching context. In this paper I seek to demonstrate how a symbolic approach to culture deriving from Cultural Anthropology can be effectively used in an EFL classroom setting. Using two classes that I have taught as examples, I explore the utility and challenges of using this conception of culture as a topic in an EFL course, and the methodology that can be used to integrate the topic of culture into a language teaching context. |
