中文摘要 | 本文從國內外相關文獻,探討國內各級學校英語教學中的詞彙量問題。全文分為四小節:一、前言;二、詞彙量與篇章涵蓋率;三、國內英語教學的詞彙問題—國小、國中、與高中;四、大學英文的詞彙量問題;五、結論。 本文先從詞彙量與篇章涵蓋率的問題,討論詞彙量的根本意義。接著就國內各級學校英文課課程所訂定的詞彙量,討論適當與否的問題。最後,深入探討大學英文教學中的詞彙量問題。於討論過程中,筆者依據學理與教學環境,提出一些建議,以供學界參考,也希望藉此拋磚引玉。 研究發現,國內中學英語課程所訂定的詞彙量,頗合乎學理,但是,國小英語部分,在認識詞彙方面,缺乏明確的規定,可能導致一連串的問題。筆者建議國小英語的認識詞彙,以500到600個詞為宜,並且應當編列一份詞彙表,以供參考。 而大學英文部分,因為缺乏教育部的任何規範,問題更多。筆者建議大學英文應明定8,000到10,000個詞的詞彙量為教學指標,如此,則大學英文可以起死回生,也可以為國家培養更具競爭力的優秀人才! |
英文摘要 | This paper discusses the problem of vocabulary size in English teaching in Taiwan. The research method is basically a review of related literature on the issue. There are five sections: (1) Introduction, (2) Vocabulary size and text coverage, (3) Vocabulary size in the English teaching curriculum of Taiwan, with special reference to English teaching in elementary and secondary schools, (4) The problem of vocabulary size in college English in Taiwan, (5) Conclusion. Based on the literature reviewed, it is found that the vocabulary sizes stipulated in the curricula for junior and senior high schools are quite reasonable; those for elementary schools and colleges, however, need further clarification and definition. For elementary English, it is necessary not only to define the size of vocabulary for recognition but also to prepare two vocabulary lists-one for words for production and the other for words for recognition. As to college English, an emphasis on vocabulary teaching can be a good way to supplement traditional college English and make the course a more challenging one. It is suggested that a vocabulary size of 8,000-10,000 is desirable for college students if they really want to become competent and successful readers and users of the English language. |
