英文摘要 | Combining the Buddhist doctrines and the Chinese traditions, "The Great Maudgalyayana Rescues His Mother from the Underworld" in Dunhuang is a story about Maudgalyayana entering the Underworld to save his mother. Dante Alighieri, in "The Inferno" of The Divine Comedy, builds a Christian Underworld from his personal experience. By studying the relation between sin and punishment, the profound meaning of sin in both the Western and the Orient religions can be revealed. From the methods of punishment and the world view, under the different religious cultures, the Underworld of both the West and the Orient, however, present a similar structure in order, which is supported by a concept of sin and its punishment found in both the West and the Orient. Therefore, this research, which explores the religious meaning hidden behind the stories of the Underworld form a religious concept of sin and its punishment, not only studies the two different religions, but also reveals a profound spirituality in the different religions, i.e., veritas, bonitas, and pulchritudo. The contrast between sin and veritas, bonitas and pulchritudo is where religious practice exists as well as salvation. Under the surface of telling people to be good, the stories of the Underworld in fact present spiritual sublimation. |
