英文摘要 | This article, taking the perspective of population migration and infectious diseases, uses Chang-ch'ih disease as an example to examine how people migrating to the Ling-nan region during the Six Dynasties faced the threat of disease. Part one uses population data compiled during the Six Dynasties to illustrate how migrations led to population increases in the Ling-nan region at that time. Part two discusses the relationship between population migration and infectious diseases. Part three examines ancient Chinese medical texts to reveal that Chang-ch'ih was actually what is known today as pernicious malaria. Part four analyzes why the Ling-nan region was regarded as the origin of Chang-ch'ih in historical documents, and how this sit uation came about. Part five examines the relationship between population migrations and the spread of Chang-ch'ih disease. Analysis of population migrations, agricultural developments, military expeditions and business activities in the region illustrate that lack of immunity of immigrants from the north was the primary reason for outbreaks of Chang-ch'ih disease in the Ling-nan region. The article concludes by explaining that medical texts dealing specifically with the treatment of diseases in the Ling-nan region begin to appear when northerners migrated into the region and gained a better understanding of endemic diseases. |
