英文摘要 | The main purpose of the interpretation of ancient texts is to communicate their meaning to readers of later times. For this purpose scholiasts have usually explained archaic characters by selecting characters with the same or similar meaning in the language of their own time. The concept of fan-xun, however, which means explaining a character in an ancient text by giving its antonym in a scholium, violates this norm and creates a paradox. In recent years, scholars have suggested replacing fan-xun with the explanation of "same character, opposite meaning" (反義同詞) in cases where scholia use antonyms to signify that characters in an ancient text are actually used in their opposite sense. Nevertheless, there are many factors which have caused cases of fan-xun to arise, and a semantic approach alone is insufficient to fully explain this phenomenon. Using past studies as a starting point, this paper explores the formation process of the concept of fan-xun, from a semiotic perspective, discussing its origins and types in terms of syntax, semantics and usage. Through this study, the author hopes to contribute to a broader and deeper understanding of the nature of fan-xun. |
