英文摘要 | Objective: This study investigated the association of allergic disease with the consumption of a vegetarian diet in Taiwan. The occurrence of asthma and allergic disease might be associated with dietary components. Materials and Methods: We used questionnaires to screen children from 5 to 15 years old in Haulien county and compared the prevalence of allergic disease between vegetarian and non-vegetarian children. This cross-sectional study include 1,395 non-vegetarian children 775 vegetarian children. Information on diet, smoking, family history, breast feeding, and current pets was obtained. Local vegetarian food in Taiwan consists mainly of rice, vegetables, peanuts, beans, peas, and fruit with vegetable oil. We asked subject to determine whether they consumed this type food and classified them as strict vegetarian, moderate vegetarian or non-vegetarian. Results: The prevalence of current wheezing was significantly lower in all children on a moderate vegetarian diet (OR 0.50; 95% CI, 0.28-0.88) and in moderate vegetarian girls (OR 0.13; 95% CI, 0.03-0.54). On the other hand, the prevalence of current wheezing was not significantly associated with a moderate or strict vegetarian diet in boys (OR 0.97; 95% CI, 0.51-1.86 and OR 0.85; 95% CI, 0.46-1.58). The prevalence of allergic rhinitis and atopic dermatitis was not significantly associated with a vegetarian diet. Conclusion: Current wheezing, but not other manifestations of allergy, was less commonly reported among children consuming a moderate vegetarian diet. |
